I took a trip to Paris recently…… I’m sharing it in parts as I believe it deserves it!!
Paris Part 1
Love Locking, Pont Des Arts, Paris
Paris is known worldwide as the city of love and visually it’s upped its game with this symbolic trend of love locking. I have seen pictures of this dotted worldwide but most famously photographed at The Pont des Arts and Pont de l’Archevêché bridges inParis. There are rumours that these bridges symbolise different commitments altogether, The Pont des Arts is for your committed partner and Pont de l’Archevêché is for your lover.
Couples write their names and messages on a padlock and lock it onto the bridge. They then throw the key into the river below symbolizing their undying love. I was warned not to take this light hearted as the only way to unlock this lovers bond is by retrieving the key and unlocking the padlock. It was reported last year that the government who claim the lovers locks are an eyesore and will ultimately result in structure damage removed the padlocks from Pont des Arts. There are also common accounts of heartbroken believers taking to their ex lovers padlocks with cutters through desperation to unlock their hearts, maybe it was just a bad year for love?! Romance however is far from dead and it didn’t take long for this bridge to be filled once again. There were talks to give hopeless romantics a more practical place to lock their love with metal tree structures along the banks but it has yet to happen and so this trend remains an ongoing debate between practicality versus symbolism.
